Conversation #6: Failure to Initiate

Let us know what you think about Failure to Initiate and how you feel we can simplify or explain it better! This is a pretty common rulebreak we hand out, so I'm sure we can get some input! Keep it civil.

Failure to Initiate

When you have an RP reason to want someone dead, but you do not re-initiate the RP after a prior situation. You must RP out another engagement verbally before engaging in any conflict.

  • You must initiate RP every time you go to engage conflict. This is a roleplay server, not a team deathmatch shooter game.
  • If the person you are engaged with leaves the area, escapes, and goes to another area of the map, you must re-engage with them verbally before opening fire.
  • Twitter is not a proper way of initiating.

This & "rules of engagement" seem to cover much of the same ground.  My thoughts on the former apply here;

  1. Any exceptions need to be crystal clear
  2. Specify that "initiating" means speaking to someone in person

Beyond that I would just repeat that keeping the rules as short as possible will make them clearer.  No need to editorialize here, the rules are simply a statement of fact. The goal is that players read them in total and understand them, we have other places for discussion if necessary.

 In this case:

You must initiate RP verbally and in person before engaging in violent conflict.

I think the only thing this could use is an addition where it maybe clarifies what is expected from them when you say "proper"  escalation. Calling someone a bitch 15x in 2 minutes may seem like proper escalation to them. Or they could lead into it with each person having a 5 minute dramatic monologue in the style of a 1940 Noir period piece.

Agree this needs to be clearer.  I'd also say an exception could be made for gangs since simply yelling something like "Mirror Park Boba Gang, sucka!" would be clear enough initiation for characters involved in gang  RP.

Can we also make this apply to NPC's bka "Locals"?  They give us plenty of excuses to knock them out, there's no need to run around punching them or running them over for no reason.  It's totally immersion killing and failRP.  I'm not necessarily saying we should have to verbally initiate but we should at the very least have a clear reason to commit a violent act towards them, just like anyone else.

I often see ppl run down the street punching them one after another or running over everyone on a sidewalk.

Maybe better handled under RDM, but as I said above this rule is kind of that by a different name.
