Soft Wipe/Reset for 1.1

Before you downvote to oblivion please take a moment to consider:

Why is this needed?

⦁ Various exploits with great impact on cash & material, some of which will persist until 1.0

⦁ The legacy of some individuals in positions of power or influence that have since been removed for acting in bad faith

⦁ Long-time players (like myself) have characters that benefited from game mechanics that were very unbalanced at the time

⦁ Characters that were able to easily establish themselves at the top due to the lack of opposition from a criminal justice system that remains under construction

⦁ Access to various resources or other opportunities that have been temporarily disabled or put on hold until 1.0

⦁ Restructuring of most Whitelist jobs & services

What is a Soft Wipe?

Let each character keep up to 2 vehicles (plus the Xmas Lego cars), and 2 properties (residential or commercial/business).

Whitelist jobs and ranks would be preserved along with whatever licenses your character holds.

All other items are wiped and all bank accounts capped at $50k maximum.

Along with this, D8 will conduct an audit for unused properties as well as any that do not conform to established rules for "zoning" (for example, homes with trailer interiors) or that may have been wrongfully sold at well under market value by rogue agents.

When:

After any major bugs or other economy/balance problems in 1.0 have been corrected (iow release 1.1)

I think this will create fresh & fair start for all players that is crucial for the long-term health of the server. I know the plan has been to avoid this but I believe it will be necessary eventually and this seems like an ideal time to take that step as we move forward.

As a bonus, I think this will encourage players to stop hoarding stuff and put things in play or make other moves to create some fun RP while we wait for 1.0

Thanks for reading.

If I'm not mistaken some of the new coding (i.e inventory system) was being done a certain way so that a wipe would NOT have to happen.

I'm all for some sort of "soft wipe" but a few things need to be looked into CLOSELY such as people saving up money for a large business and needing to wait til 1.0.  To lose all of that hard earned money would be pretty harsh for those who have put the time and effort in and are waiting patiently.  I do however see people with just tons of money buying cars left and right and tipping people massively at their jobs because they just simply have the extra money to throw around.

I was surprised to hear it wasn't necessary in switching to a weight-based inventory system.  I fully expected that would require some kind of wipe to implement.

Totally agree re: businesses, plus there are those that have been waiting for their business to be truly functional in 1.0 (restaurants & so on).  I can see how a voucher system might be too much of a headache to restore anything beyond that.

I would not be against a full wipe tbh

    Meaning it's all or nothing?

Harsh, but I could live with it. Maybe business properties could be returned? That's the only thing I'd be that worried about since so many are just getting rolling & the start-up costs are so high (both in money and time invested.)

Honestly? Other than that I'd be willing to bite the bullet and start over. I strongly believe we need a clean slate. More to the point, if we can agree that a wipe is necessary at all (and I strongly believe it is) then a stable 1.01 seems like the ideal time to do it.

As always, thanks for the consideration either way.

I'm not saying all or nothing... but from a database perspective I would want to wipe it clean and have a fresh start on it. Its best for performance and for structure. If we did decide to carry anything forward there would need to be a system for how to do that with a fresh database.

I personally believe that a wipe is due course but further down the line our server is still fairly new.

Servers been in public beta for over a year. That's not really new. heh

I do get what you are saying. But I don't want all the work that I have put in already to be wiped. That's a lot of hours grinding. I get that some people may have abused mechanics to get where they are, but the people that legit spent so many hours to scrape by, then have it all yanked, it's kind of demoralizing.

We were already told that 1.0 would not contain a wipe. If that changed than we would see a lot of people get really pissed or even leave. Maybe if we hit a 2.0 or even a 1.5 with a warning far enough in advance would be better.

But I don't want all the work that I have put in already to be wiped.

    Sure, neither do I, but

I get that some people may have abused mechanics to get where they are

There's no "may" about it, that's happened and in more than one way.  Further, there are a lot of people who didn't do anything wrong but still benefitted indirectly from those that did.  Aside from exploits there were some fundamental game mechanics that were severely unbalanced to begin with - I won't go into detail but you probably know of at least some of what I'm referring to.

It can be fixed and rebalanced but there's no walking all that back, the damage was done.

Of course no one wants to lose their pixel loot but ultimately that's all it is..  As a Rust admin you're familiar enough with that wipe cycle.  Things don't move nearly so fast in GTA RP but the reasons for wiping periodically are the same.

Truth be told I didn't really expect this to happen but if it's left up to the players no one is going to vote for a wipe, ever.  I thought it worth having the conversation anyway to at least get people used to the idea that it's going to need to happen eventually.

I wouldn't entertain a wipe like this for technical reasons. This is just too difficult to do and has too much risk to introducing issues through the database. It's more work than its worth.
