Conversation #4: Character Relations & Transfers

Feel free to talk about the rule below and what you think about it and if anything needs to change. If you feel anything should be elaborated upon or simplified you are welcome to let us know. Ultimately, please keep it civil!

Character relations & Transfers

All knowledge and possessions of each character must stay to that character and never be transferred or shared between characters.

  • Your characters are not meant to know one another and share information amongst the characters in a way that would benefit them.

    • For example, claiming your other character is a sibling or a cousin greatly goes against this and should never be used as an excuse for a transfer of knowledge. If your characters happen to be related, consider them estranged from one another or not know that one another is living in the city.

The same thing goes for material goods. You should not transfer cars, money, or homes to other characters-- nor should they be able to share properties or businesses.

  • This is exploiting our systems and just not within the ways of roleplay.

Take pride in having your characters individually rise up and make their own names for themselves without relying on the other.

*NOTE: Assisting people with violating this rule by being or providing a means of transferring between characters is also a violation of this rule.

This is also includes information.  Each character should learn the location of things, how to do things, & other IC knowledge individually.

May also need to mention not having multiple characters in the same gang

Ofcoarse no information can be shared between them, but it would be cool to be able to slip something like hey my cousin does x, i dont know much about it havent talked to them in a very long time. Whether it be they have a certain car you are talking to someone about, or some other very niche conversations. I like the feel of having a distant relative more than pretending they dont exist

I don't feel that they should be related at all. I do feel that they should have zero knowledge of the other character.

as someone who has characters who are related but very estranged due to reasons i won't disclose (in case anyone cares about their backstory), i disagree. when someone brings up one of my characters to a different one of my characters (bindi to anya, etc.), that character is then made aware that they're in city but unless they've been told about something, they have no knowledge of what they're doing. for the longest time bindi and mabel had no idea that each other were in the city, and only recently did bindi become aware that it's her cousin mabel and not just some random person who shared the name. mabel pretends like bindi doesn't exist and wants nothing to do with her anyways.

from my understanding and what i was told, you don't have to pretend they don't exist. your other characters just know nothing about their life.

Change "my cousin" to "some guy on Twitter" and its np. Anything posted there, Insta, vehicle-sales etc is common knowledge anyway so your relation to them isn't necessary.  If it's something else that isn't common knowledge or you wouldn't want posted publicly..  That's probably the kind of situation the rule is meant to prevent.

I agree with all this, I hate the "my cousin" shit its just lazy IMO, Peoples characters need to be unique, maybe you cant change your voice thats fine have different traits and interests.

I also hate the cousin or family between characters. It is pretty simple. One character even knowing the other in the smallest ways is stupid because as a player, they would never have the ability to meet. With the mindset of them knowing small bits about each other, wouldn't they e-mail each other? Make a phone call? Be told by your mom they are there too? There are so many factors that would allow someone to actually meet the other In Real Life if they were connected somehow.

If you kill a character off, and then want to start over on a family member i find that perfectly acceptable.

Example: John Smith is killed off by a Mafia attack. His brother Jack Smith joins the city to find who did it and seek revenge.

Playing family members happens on some servers, but normally those servers aren't looking for the most quality of role play. If you want family members, have a friend play one. This makes it much nicer as you can actually interact with one another.

People like to say someone is their Mom or brother etc, never bothers me if the age difference doesn't make sense as who know, maybe they were adopted after a horrible Tilt-a-Whirl accident at the county fair.  The main thing is that it adds to RP & connects different people's stories in a way that an Evil Twin character functionally can't, like you said.

The whole "brother mother sister cousin" RP is very tricky and really slippery slope. Sometimes good RPers can incorporate it into their story and do something interesting, but most of the time it's used as a meta tool.

-Person makes a new character and approaches the same gang or social group their OG character is in or heavily RPs with and goes "Oh hey its me ___X you know my cousin ___x lets go be friends and do all the illegal things that my cousin ___x cant do"

-"My cousin heard that ABC is in gang XYZ. Yeah they stay over on 1337 Gang St."

It's usually something along those lines and often a not so subtle attempt to get around violating meta rules. For this I think it just shouldn't be allowed, maybe grandfather in people whos characters already share the same last name but don't use it for any in-game events other than a backstory like soup explained with her characters.
